Stunning Gowns & Stunning Sydney - Vellos Bridal, Caroline White & Lisa Diamond Bridal Wear Shoot

At What a Night Events we love pouring over pictures of beautiful wedding gowns, imagining ourselves in them with the man of our dreams standing beside us, the perfect photo poses, beautiful weather, a gorgeous reception to go to after....ok, so sometimes we get a bit carried away! However, how could you not when you receive a stunning shoot like this in your inbox!

Maria from Vellos Bridal worked with some very talented photographers, Caroline White and Lisa Diamond to showcase some of Vellos Bridal's beautiful gowns. As soon as we saw the shoot we just had to share it!
Maria says: "The inspiration for the shoot was simply just to capture some beautiful images of beautiful gowns in a gorgeous Sydney setting. There is nothing that says SYDNEY more than the beautiful, iconic building “The Sydney Opera House,” and this made the perfect backdrop for these gorgeous dresses."
We definitely agree with Maria there! The simplicity of this shoot really made the gorgeous dresses stand out and highlighted the beauty of Sydney. Any wonder the Opera House is such a popular wedding photo spot.

Take some time to enjoy the photos and check out the talented team behind it - Vellos Bridal, Caroline White and Lisa Diamond. We give you permission to get a little carried away dreaming of your perfect day...

Event Trend Alert: Paper Chains

From humble beginnings in the kindergarten class rooms, it looks like paper chains are set for a big revival for this years spring and summer parties.

In a nostalgic throwback to parties of yesteryear, paper chains not only look great but are simple and fun to make. If you're thinking of using paper chains to decorate a child's party, it's a great way to get the child involved in the decorating process, or if you're wanting to DIY your decorations for any other event, paper chains are simple and quick to make.

Simply cut strips of paper (length and width can vary depending on the look you're going for, generally 20cm by 4cm works well) and make a circle and glue the ends to secure.

Think about different types of papers for different types of effects; a child's birthday would look great with bright block colours, whilst a wedding would look pretty with white lace cut paper strips (see Picture 1). Have a look at a few examples below taken from Pinterest:

Blogger Event - Dove Colour

Last night I had the privilege of attending a Nuffnang blogger event along with my good friends at Whim Online Magazine. It was for the launch of the new
Dove Colour Care range.

Upon entry, we were greeted with well dressed waiters who offered us trays with selections of San Pellegrino mineral water, Moët Champagne and my favourite, "Hair Vitality Juice" in jars with striped paper straws! The "Hair Vitality Juice" was a green juice that tasted like it had celery, cucumber and apple in it; good for you, yummy and it looked great in the jars with the paper straws.

We were first taken into a room with chairs and a screen, and watched a light show that talked about how important colours are to every day life, and how they can make us feel. This is important not just when you are deciding what to wear and what colour your hair should be, but also when you are planning your colour theme for any event, as you want to make sure that your colours appropriately match the mood you want your guests to feel. I did a post a while ago on the psychology of colour, so you can have a read about that if you are interested (see here: The Psychology of Colour).

After the colour show, we were taken to another room where we sat and talked with professional image consultants/colour specialists who told us all about what colours suit us best and what our colouring says about your personality. Whether you believe in this or not, it is pretty interesting, and my "Winter" diagnosis was bang on with my personality traits. If you're interested in which colours suit you and what season you are, check out this link What's Your Colour Season?

The event space was lovely, it was a big open room adorned with white chairs. It was a very clean and crisp, yet warm space, with concrete floors and white walls. The lighting was very bright, but a good amount for this sort of event. We were served fancy canapés by our fancy waiters as we sat and listened to the talks about colour psychology, including: tempura zucchini flowers, butter ravioli, salmon skewers and fig with goat's cheese.

When we left, we were given goody bags/media kits which had a press release and the Dove Colour Care range in it. It smells lovely and I can't wait to start using it. Overall, they threw an impressive event that was a good opportunity to meet with other bloggers and interesting people. Then my friends and I went and enjoyed some delicious dinner & mulled wine!

Let's Cook: Recipes from Easter Lunch

As promised, here are the recipes from my Easter lunch! First up, the entrée:

Caramelised Onion, Tomato and Basil Tart

Prep time 10 mins
Cook time 15 mins
Total time 25 mins

Makes 4 large tarts or 8 smaller tarts
Serves: 4 or 8

Ingredients
2 sheets of ready rolled, frozen puff pastry, partially thawed
3 large onions, peeled and chopped
4 large tomatoes, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons of basil, chopped
1 small clove of garlic, minced
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 egg, beaten
salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
·         Combine the tomato slices, basil, garlic and salt and pepper in a bowl and set aside to marinate.
·         Place a large frying pan over a medium heat and add the olive oil. When the pan has come up to heat add the onion and reduce heat to low. Season with salt and pepper and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. When caramelised, remove the onions from the pan and set aside to cool.
·         Preheat the oven to 210 degrees celsius (410 Farenheit) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
·        Cut the sheets of pastry in half and trim 2cm from the borders of the pastry. Place the trimmed edges on top of the edges of the pastry to form a border and prick the centre of the pastry with a fork 6 times being careful not to go all the way through.
·         Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg and bake in the oven for 5 minutes, or until lightly golden.
·         Remove from the oven and press down the centre of the pastry before topping with the caramelised onions and then the marinated tomato slices.
·         Return to the oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until pastry is golden.

Moroccan Spiced Lamb with Quinoa Salad

150g (1 cup) quinoa
250ml (1 cup) water
1 cup Moroccan seasoning
1 leg of lamb
2 tbs olive oil
110g (2/3 cup) pitted kalamata olives, halved
140g (2/3 cup) sun-dried tomatoes, halved
400g can cannellini beans, rinsed, drained
1 red onion, thinly sliced
2 tbs drained baby capers
2/3 cup chopped fresh continental parsley
80ml (1/3 cup) olive oil
2 tbs Woolworths Select Red Wine Vinegar
2 anchovy fillets, finely chopped
2 tsp crushed garlic
Greek yoghurt, to serve

Step 1
Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the quinoa in a fine sieve. Rinse under cold water. Bring quinoa and water to the boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low. Cover and gently simmer for 10 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Separate with a fork and set aside to cool.

Step 2
Rub the Moroccan seasoning over the lamb and leave to marinate for 4 hours or more, removing from the fridge for the last half an hour to warm up. Put some oil in the base of a tray, and roast the lamb for 20minutes per pound

Step 3
Meanwhile, combine the quinoa, olives, tomato, beans, onion, capers and parsley in a large bowl. Season with pepper. Combine the oil, vinegar, anchovy and garlic in a small bowl. Add the oil mixture to the quinoa mixture and toss to combine.

Step 4
Slice the lamb into cutlets. Divide the quinoa mixture among plates. Top with lamb and serve with Greek yoghurt.

Nutella Gelato

2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sugar, plus 1/4 cup
4 egg yolks
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (recommended: Nutella)
1/2 cup toasted hazelnuts, crushed, for garnish

Directions
In a saucepan combine the milk, cream, and 1/2 cup sugar over medium heat. Cook until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl whip the egg yolks with the remaining sugar using an electric mixer until the eggs have become thick and pale yellow, about 4 minutes. Pour 1/2 cup of the warm milk and cream mixture into the egg mixture and stir. Add this mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over very low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture becomes thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon, about 7 to 10 minutes.

Place a strainer over a medium bowl and pour the warm custard mixture through the strainer. Stir in the vanilla and hazelnut spread until it dissolves. Chill mixture completely before pouring into an ice cream maker and follow manufacturer's instructions to freeze. To serve, scoop gelato into serving bowls and top with hazelnuts.

Let's Bake: Easy, Peasy, Healthy Biscuits

If I said to you that you could bake some easy, peasy biscuits that were not only simple, BUT insanely good for you, you'd think I'd gone BANANAS wouldn't you?

Well...the good news is that I have not in fact GONE bananas, I am instead going to BAKE with bananas. Check it out:

Banana & Oat Cookies

Ingredients:
2 bananas
2 cups of oats
Makes approximately 15 biscuits

Directions:
Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (fan forced)

Blend 1 cup of oats with the bananas (you can use a blender or food processor) until smooth

Mix the banana/oat paste with the other cups of oats until you have a nice consistency. If you like sweetness and that's the kind of biscuit you're going for, add some honey.

You can now add any extras you would like (the aim is to think healthy, so for example sultanas, goji berries, etc, or if you want a chocolate hit but want to stay healthy, opt for some cacao nibs, or you could just put some dark choc bits in, I won't tell on you!). I used sultanas in mine, so I just threw a handful or so in.

On a lined baking tray, place evenly  sized dollops of biscuit batter and press down lightly with a fork (or leave in a ball like I did for more of a "banana and oats bite" look). Place in the oven and bake for about 10-15 minutes (depending on your oven) or until golden brown.

Leave to cool completely and then enjoy your delicious, simple and healthy biscuits!
(Store in an airtight container)

Let's Bake: Cupcakes

Because I looooveee baking and often desserts and baked goods are integral parts of events, I thought I would share my love of baking with you all.

First recipe post: Basic Cupcakes

150g unsalted butter, softened
150g caster sugar
175g self-raising flour
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 180C. Line a 12-hole muffin pan with 12 cupcake papers.
2. Crack eggs into a cup and beat lightly with a fork.3
3. Place all ingredients into a bowl. Beat with an electric mixer for 2 minutes or until light and creamy. Divide mixture evenly between cupcake cases.
4. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes (depending on oven) or until firm to touch. Allow to cool for a few minutes and transfer to a wire rack. Allow to cool completely before icing.

Tips
- I always use unsalted butter in my cooking, but you can use normal butter if you wish.
- I chop my softened butter up into little pieces and then cream it by itself before adding anything else. I beat until pale and then add the rest of the ingredients. It just helps to ensure that all the butter is sufficnetly beat and to mix better with the other ingredients
- I find 1 tsp of vanilla extract never enough, so I always add a bit extra
- Make sure eggs are room temperature

What was that you say? You don't want just BASIC cupcakes? Easy...
Now, to turn these basic cupcakes into Tim Tam Cupcakes with Chocolate Ganache. Now, don't panic, it's a lot easier than it sounds, all you have to do is add some crushed up Tim Tams after Step 3. I put some Tim Tams in a zip lock bag and beat them with a rolling pin (a good time to take any frustrations out, give them a reaaaallllyy good beat and crush them to smithereens). Bake as normal

After you let your cupcakes cool, place one larger saucepan with a bit of water in it on your stove, and in the other saucepan, place half a block of chocolate and half a cup of thickened cream. Stir continuously until melted and then spread on your cupcakes. Easy!

Keep Calm and Sparkle

Glitter is something that is enjoying a resurgence, think décor, nails, make up, etc. As long as it is done in a tasteful way, it can really add something to your home décor, or, as I am more interested in, event décor.

After seeing a few pictures of glitter done well, I decided that I would pair gold glitter with metallic gold decorations for an upcoming event. The event actually has a ZOO theme, however I wanted to make this theme a little more mature, and thought by taking a common animal colour (think yellows, oranges, etc) and turning it metallic, I could really make it work!

It's all in the planning stages at the moment, but I have started making some of the decorations. See below for the picture of what I was working on this afternoon, and for more glittery pics!

DIY Ideas

Some simple DIY ideas for your next event!

Pretty Fairy Lights
Purchase a packet of paper drinking cups and push the bulbs of a string of fairy lights through the cups. You now have some unique lights for your event!

Candle Holders
Collect some jars (big enough to put a tea light candle in) and clean them thoroughly. After they have dried, using one sheet of tissue paper (whichever colour/s you like, light colours work best) cover the jar with PVA glue and then wrap in the tissue paper. Leave to dry and voila! Pretty candle holders. Pop a tea light candle in each and watch them glow.

Photobooth
Using a plain coloured sheet (white is a good idea), hang it over something that allows it to be used as a backdrop (e.g. tree branches, a clothes rack, etc). You can leave it at that, or you can use some garlands to create a unique look (see above, metallic garlands) or you could stick some cut out shapes onto the curtain. Then you use a normal camera, or a polaroid if you have one, and take photos!

Name Tags For Drinks
Instead of purchasing expensive drink identifiers, a simple solution is to use rubber bands! Place the band around a glass and using a ball point pen, write the person's name on the glass. No more mixed up glasses again!

Carrot Cutlery
A cute idea for an Easter picnic/event is to bundle green cutlery up in an orange serviette (as seen above). Secure with a green ribbon and you have yourself some carrot cutlery! This simple idea is sure to put a smile on your guests faces
